Se han realizado numerosos intentos de descifrar la escritura rongorongo de la Isla de Pascua desde su descubrimiento a finales del siglo XIX. Se han realizado numerosos intentos de descifrar la escritura rongorongo de la Isla de Pascua desde su descubrimiento a finales del siglo XIX. Como con la mayoría de las escrituras sin descifrar, muchas de las propuestas han sido imaginativas. Aparte de una parte de una tablilla que se ha demostrado que trata de un calendario lunar, no se entiende ninguno de los textos, e incluso el calendario no se puede leer realmente. Hay tres serios obstáculos para el descifrado, asumiendo que el rongorongo es escritura: el pequeño número de textos restantes, que comprenden únicamente 15 000 glifos legibles; la falta de contexto para interpretar los textos, como ilustraciones o paralelismos con textos que puedan leerse; y el hecho de que el idioma rapanui moderno está muy mezclado con el tahitiano y es poco probable que refleje fielmente el lenguaje de las tablillas —especialmente si tienen un registro lingüístico específico como los conjuros—, mientras que los pocos ejemplos que quedan del lenguaje antiguo están bastante restringidos en términos de temas y género y tal vez no correspondan bien a los mensajes de las tablillas. ​ Desde una propuesta de Butinov y Knórozov en la década de 1950, la mayoría de los filólogos, lingüistas e historiadores culturales han adoptado la idea de que el rongorongo no era un ejemplo de escritura real, sino protoescritura, por lo tanto, los textos se basan en ideogramas y jeroglíficos, lo que permite el uso de medios mnemotécnicos, como la de la etnia Naxi, ​que con toda probabilidad imposibilitaría el descifrado.​ Este escepticismo se justifica no únicamente por el fracaso de los numerosos intentos de desciframiento, sino también por la extrema escasez de los sistemas de escritura independientes en el mundo.
