Junto a ella, más de un millón de soldados de la OTAN y el Pacto de Varsovia esperaban una posible acción de guerra. Entre 1952 y 1990, durante la Guerra Fría, el sistema de la frontera fue utilizado por el gobierno de Alemania Oriental para impedir invasiones de la OTAN, acciones desestabilizadoras de occidente y que sus ciudadanos huyeran a Alemania Occidental seducidos por la propagada aliada desplegada con ese propósito. Estaba formado por vallas, muros, alambradas, campos minados, zanjas y otros obstáculos, era patrullado por cerca de 50.000 soldados en el este de Alemania, con órdenes de disparar y matar (el famoso Schießbefehl u "Orden 101"), con la ayuda de perros guardianes, alarmas, torres eléctricas y los sistemas de vigilancia, armas automáticas, frente a decenas de miles de tropas de la Alemania Occidental, los Estados Unidos y Reino Unido.​ Alrededor de 140 personas murieron tratando de cruzar la frontera durante sus 45 años de existencia.​ La frontera causó enormes cambios en la economía y en la sociedad alemana.​ El Muro de Berlín, que separó desde 1961 hasta 1989 Berlín Oriental de Berlín Occidental, era la parte más famosa del sistema, pero ni siquiera abarcaba el 10% total de la frontera, que se convirtió en la más militarizada de toda Europa, y una de las más militarizadas del mundo. Era una manifestación literal de la famosa metáfora de Winston Churchill en 1946: "Una cortina de hierro desciende a través del continente". De esta manera, la frontera se convirtió más que en una simple línea de defensa: sus fortificaciones evitaban que civiles de la República Democrática Alemana escapasen hacia la parte occidental. De la misma forma, era algo más que una simple frontera, pues marcaba la división de Europa en dos campos rivales, tanto políticamente (Democracia liberal capitalista, contra un estado comunista), como económicamente (la CEE contra el Comecon), y militarmente (la OTAN contra el Pacto de Varsovia). Así esta frontera se convirtió definitivamente en uno de los principales símbolos de la Guerra Fría. El 9 de noviembre de 1989 el gobierno de Alemania Oriental decretó la apertura del Muro de Berlín y de la frontera interalemana, que había permanecido cerrada salvo contadas excepciones durante 28 años. En los días siguientes, millones de alemanes orientales entraron en la Alemania Occidental. Miles de personas decidieron mudarse al Occidente a principios de 1990, a medida que cada vez menos restricciones eran impuestas, y que los vínculos rotos entre ambos gobiernos se restablecían. Las formalidades del control fronterizo se convirtieron en algo más que una curiosidad histórica. El 1 de julio de 1990,​ la República Federal de Alemania y la República Democrática de Alemania acordaban, con motivo de los 45 años de su fundación, la suspensión de los controles fronterizos entre ellas, y el 3 de octubre de 1990, con motivo de la reunificación alemana, se abolía definitivamente la frontera. Poco queda de las fortificaciones de la frontera. Su ruta ha sido declarada parte del "" que une los parques nacionales y reservas naturales a lo largo del antiguo "Telón de Acero" desde el Círculo Polar Ártico hasta el Mar Negro. Algunos museos y monumentos a lo largo de la frontera recuerdan el momento de la división de Alemania y, en ciertos lugares se conservan elementos de las fortificaciones.​
